24.3 Parsing Clues - Pre: נִק, יִקָּ, הִקָּ
Memorize the \(Pre\) and the \(V_S\) for each stem, not the entire paradigm!
נ is always present in the Niphal, but sometimes it’s present as a Dagesh Forte
- Remember, we use the label \(Pre\) for any diagnostic combination of word-initial consonants (prefix or root letters), vowels, and Dagesh Fortes (as applicable)
- ק is used as a placeholder to represent \(R_1\) of any strong verb
- For the Imperfect forms, י represents any of the Imprefect preformatives (note that 1cs א often usually takes a different \(V_P\))
Memorize these three \(Pre\) formulas and the conjugations in which they are used
- NP, NPt, some NA: \(Pre =\) נִקְ
- NI: \(Pre =\) יִקָּ - and so forth for the other Imperfect forms
- NM, N∞, some NA:\(Pre=\) הִקָּ
- The נ prefix is added to every form of every conjugation
- In the NP, NPt and in one form of the NA, the נ appears
- In the NI, NM, N∞, and the other form of the NA, the נ is assimilated into a Dagesh Forte in \(R_1\)
- Niphal Strong \(V_P = I\) ALWAYS (except for NI1cs)
