3.10 Furtive Patach
Furtive Patach under a WORD FINAL ח or ע is said BEFORE the guttural letter and is not a full vowel.
The Furtive Patach is a significant exception to just about everything else we’ve discussed related to vowels and syllabification:
- The Furtive Patach is not a full vowel and is not counted in syllabification
- The graphic above is Mathew 1:1 from the Delitsch Hebrew version - note the furtive Patachs under the Ayin in Yeshua and the Chet
- The vowel is pronounced before the guttural - “Yeshua Hamashiach”, and not “Yeshua HaMashi_cha_”
